Trying out digital sculpting

Cheshire-cat-like thing in Sculptris

I love sculpting in the real world. Love getting my hands in clay. It’s been a while since I’ve worked with ceramic clay, but I still model stuff using paper clay (no space for my own kiln). I thought it would be fun to see if I could translate what I’ve learned in real-world sculpting into the world of 3d digital. I’m starting out using the very basic program from Pixologic called Sculptris (they are the makers of ZBrush). I’ve tried to dabble in Maya in the past, and even ZBrush and I feel like the learning curve is so steep… there’s no immediate payoff of being able to make something fun. With Sculptris, the UI is so easy, it’s easy to just get in and try it out. Plus, they promise that the skills you learn here translate directly into ZBrush. What do you think? Kind of scary, no?

Anyone else trying to learn to model in Sculptris or ZBrush? Would love to hear how you went about it—what resources you found useful…
